The little petrol engine

The Little Petrol Engine belomging to the Eclipse Peat Company shown crossing the Somerset & Dorset Train Line three quarters of a mile to the east os Ashcott Station at 'Petfu Sidings' which were opened in 1920 serving local Peat Works

The stricken locomotive, No.3260 'stuck in the mud'.

On thec 26th of August 1949 on a foggy morning the engine stalled , the dtiver tried to uncouple the wagons kaden with peat but unfortunately was unable to do so, he ran down the line to warn the British Rail  Train with one passnger coach and wagons proceeding from Glastonbury at 8.05 however he was not seen by the crew due to the thick fog. The train collided with the Petrol Engine and wagons derailing the locomotive, the crew lept from the footplate left the track and ended up in the mud of the Glastonbury Canal beside the line. A crane from Bath managed to rerail the passenger coach, but because of the mud it was impossible to position the crane to lift the train in one go. It took eight days to cut up the egine into pieces of under four tons which had to be lifted away using a makeshift crane with old railway sleepers.
